acts_as_conference Snippets from the Minion View
By: Chris Kaukis | Tags:Rob flew me down for acts_as_conference (I’m in Oklahoma). This was my first developer conference of any kind or type ever. I was excited and thought the conference was a complete success. The following are a list of mental snippets I have compiled.
Charles Nutter and Evan Phoenix: I got to talk 1-on-1 with both them. In fact, I got to sit right next to them while they were coding and chatting on IRC in the conference lobby area. Charles said they need someone to write specs for sockets (Jruby). Evan agreed, so perhaps they need someone to write specs for sockets too (Rubinius). Both of them constantly travel giving presentations. How they ever get anything done is unknown. I know I never could.
The Unfuddle guys: Did you know they are from Hawaii? I talked with them a lot as I bumped in to them everywhere. I think they brought the best t-shirts by the way. We were going to attend Universal Studios together on Saturday night, but the place closed at something like 6:00 PM EST. Lame! At least I got their direct mobile phone number. I got the story of how they started their nice little app. Very cool stuff! My vote for coolest attendees.
Engine Yard flew down nearly every employee it seemed. They came from all over the place: Missouri, Michigan, Florida, … I got to talk with almost all of them. They also brought t-shirts, too bad none fit me (bring more smalls people!). I stole one for a nighty and my compadre back here in Stillwater, Preston.
The Sun guy gave me a USB portable retractable mouse while I was coding away in the lobby area. Thanks! It’s actually quite cool and useful.
When I asked the big wigs what they thought of the conference they said it was great, one of the better ones.
When I asked attendees what they thought, they said it was great.
When I asked the attendees why they came they said the following, in order:
1. The price (acts_as_conference was $100 / ticket)
2. The sponsors
3. The speakers
I met more people from outside Florida then from.

Best Presentation: Rob opening and closing acts_as_conference 
Best Restaurant: Texas de Brazil
Worst Hotel: Holiday Inn
Best Hotel: The boss’s house
Best Boss: Rob
Best driver: Jon, he picked me up from the other Holiday Inn
Worst Driver: Me, I nearly killed myself almost missing an exit on the way home from the airport
Worst Part of the Whole Trip: Landing in Milwaukee when my connecting flight was out of O’Hare (our jet ran out of fuel waiting to land at O’Hare)
Best part of the whole trip: Meeting my fellow teammates in person, face-to-face, many for the first time.
